ADVENTURES IN ART
Killing Frost
Killing Frost

9 1/8" x 13/1/8"

Watercolour and pencil crayon

A few years ago we had a deep freeze. It was so cold that the trees splitting sounded like rifle shots. The hoar frost was like thick crystal moss gripping the landscape. I wondered what the Jack Frost that created this world would look like and he ended up giving the painting an eerie feel.

Love The Lovely Chaos

18 " x 12 1/2"
Mixed medium

Chaos dances with her children Erebus ( darkness ) and Night. She turns the key that will bring the chaotic times we now live. The I Ching symbols on the Earth are the Earth Mother, the symbol of submission, and Shock, the symbol of exciting power. The background is from a vision I had of stormy roiling clouds that were shaped like male figures. The eyes of Argus, protector of the Greek Gods surround the pictures to contain and protect it.

Move Between Worlds
Moving between worlds
8 1/2" x 13 3/4'
Acrylic on masonite
There is veil between the waking and the sleeping worlds. I spend alot of time in the veil, having visions, watching things morph into other things. A dog could become a boat, then a human face then maybe a landscape from another world. There are lots of strange creatures there, figments of my imagination or glimpses of other dimensions, who knows. This painting is an impression of one the transitions.

The Power of Transformation
The Power of Transformation
11 3/4" Diameter
Pen and ink
In shamanistic traditions, the spirit animals help the shaman to find answers to his or her questions. This drawing shows a shift from the human to world of spirit. The eagle is power, the bat is rebirth and the butterfly is transformation.

Sacred Places
Sacred Places
3' x 4'
Oil on canvas
This is my first oil painting. The background was from a photograph taken in Peel County, Ontario. It is one of few places that still is original boreal forest. Shamans like to go there to connect with the Earth. There have been some sightings of rare birds and animals and many earth entities. It is a place to revere and protect ... it is a Sacred Place.

Feeding the land to Avarice
Feeding the land to Avarice
20" x 16"
Gouache
We are overconsuming the bounty of the Earth. Greed sweeps down like a great bird, burning all in it's path, leaving nothing but ashes behind. An oft told tale becomes a striking work of art.

Spidermonkey Tapestry
Spidermonkey Tapestry
13" x 7 3/8"
Pen and ink
I did this piece to practice composition. Detail work, solid black and empty space I tried to balance out. Then I worked with joy and quiet, normal and abnormal. I find it a strange but pleasing work.

A Sorceress creates bubbles to show her some of the various powers from around the world. This work shows off the incredible range of a good set of " Koh-i-noor " pens.

Owl People
Owl People
15 3/4" x 15 3/4"
Oil on masonite
I had a dream in which I was standing in the middle of a blizzard. The wind howled and the snow swirled and danced along the drifts. Then I saw these figures moving towards me. They were owls, just like the first nations depicted them. Then I noticed the sound, it was like a drumming, intense and accelerating. This was accompanied by a high sound like a crystal had been struck gradually increasing in volume. I was terrified and before the owls reached me I woke up. It didn't feel like a nightmare, just an awesome experience, one I will never forget.

Princess Plum Blossom and the Dragon
Princess Plum Blossom and the Dragon
7" x 16 3/4"
Pen and ink
This a drawing done in memory of all the great fairy tales I loved a child. Fairy tales from all over the world. There's a princess, a dragon, a wish, a journey, then the happy ending. My favorites were the colour series of Fairy Tales edited by Andrew Lang. They had excellent black and white illustrations and were one of my inspirations to draw, especially the series of colouring books I have created.
